PPE Blunders: How NOT To Wear A Mask
Adapting to the new normal has been difficult for people across the globe. But some people have struggled more than others to understand the ethics of protecting themselves with PPE gear.
While the general public doesn’t wear disposable isolation gowns or face shields daily, it is common to see them wearing a mask. However, some PPE blunders, or mask blunders, nullify the whole purpose of wearing masks: covering the nose and mouth.
Here are some popular ones and ways to correct them.
NOT Below Your Nose
Many people mistakenly pull their masks before their noses. They're either misled by the debate that breathing is difficult while wearing masks or don't know how to wear a PPE mask.
For those who propose the former, if breathing were difficult with a mask, front line healthcare workers wouldn't have survived for so long. They’re wearing a mask along with all other protective clothing throughout their shift hours. If they can do it, so can we.
And in the case of the latter, it's essential to understand why covering the nose is crucial. The nasal and oral openings are primary entry points for the virus to enter your body. Not covering your nose and mouth can result in inhaling or exhaling infected vapors and transmitting the virus. Covering the mouth is not useful if your nose is exposed.
Fit To Your Face
If you’re wearing the 3 Ply Ear loop Disposable Face Masks, you need to know the right way to wear them. The mask will fit your nose and go under your chin to cover your face fully. One side of the mask is stiffer because there's a bendable strip sewn inside that goes over the nose; the other side goes under your chin.
The strip needs to be pressed over your nose to fit the contours of your face. This ensures that there are no gaps between the mask and your face that allow air to enter unfiltered. Make sure the ear loops are tight enough to pull the mask firmly against your face. The mask should be changed each time and disposed of carefully.
Keep It Intact
There are certain ethics of wearing face masks if you wish to protect yourself and others from the corona virus. There's no point in wearing a face mask if you're always pulling it down to talk or wipe off sweat or breathe freely.
Even though it may feel like a nuisance (and understandably so), your mask must remain on in public spaces. You must only remove it when you're alone in a closed area and disinfect the exposed surface soon after.
